Howard “My two favorite things in life are libraries and bicycles. They both move people forward without wasting anything. The perfect day: riding a bike to the library.” ? Peter Golkin Most people who know me would consider that a very accurate quote to describe me! I often ride my bike to work, especially with the traffic this summer. {collective groan}. As a part of Smart Commute Week, TADL is partnering with TART Trails for a special screening of The Street Project followed by a community discussion on June 4th at 6 pm at the Main Library. This documentary (with its uplifting narrative) will highlight the global, citizen-led fight to make our streets safer. This is very timely because we are welcoming our first e-assist BookBike this week (pictured above) - look for it at the Sara Hardy Farmer's Market and other locations around town this summer. Thank you to our Library Board for approving this in our 2023 budget, to help library staff get those heavy loads of books farther around town! As identified in our Strategic Planning process, our community looks to the library to hold these important gatherings and discussions. In a world that is sometimes divided by toxic polarization, especially online, holding these events and dialogue is key to growing as a community. A recent Wall Street Journal article talked about how our Gen Zs (people roughly the ages 12-27) are seeking out healthy ways to discuss topics, but I would suggest it could affect all generations. TADL has already held a number of these discussions on topics of addiction and AAPI Month. We’ll also be holding more in the future, including one with the City of Traverse City on homelessness and a book discussion with For The Love of Water (FLOW) about water. I hope you’ll join us! It's a goal of mine to share some library facts with you in this letter each month, since TADL has an operating millage on the ballot this August. Since collaboration is a theme in this letter here are a few collaboration facts! * Collaboration with local groups and individuals: As a public library we are a collaboration powerhouse, our events calendar tells the story - in the past three years alone we've collaborated with 198+ individuals and groups on 360+ events and programs! * Collaboration with other libraries: We also really shine when it comes to collaborating with other libraries. You can access our 406,393 physical items and 1.7 million digital items, plus MelCAT's 34,009,179 items (from other libraries in Michigan as of June, 2023) and then there is our Interlibrary Loan system - which gives you access to collections from around the world! * Final (random) fun fact: What is one of the strangest things we’ve found in a returned book as a bookmark? Answer: A piece of bacon! (Not recommended, let's save it for BLTs!) Thank you to everyone who has stopped by to visit with me during the past few Doughnuts with the Director sessions. I love chatting with you - and we’ll have another chance to visit during the Summer Reading Club Kickoff Party June 10. Find me on the front lawn under the colorful TADL tent!
