She passed away a few years ago and participating in the summer reading program brings back fond memories of going to the library with my Mom and reading some amazing books. The Larry Gorton Talking Book Library We're proud to announce that the Larry Gorton Talking Book Library is the 2024 Library of the Year, as designated by the National Library Service and the Library of Congress! Just inside Woodmere's front doors, this library provides free audio and Braille materials to around 400 people in Grand Traverse, Antrim, Benzie, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Manistee, Missaukee, and Wexford Counties. This library serves anyone with temporary or permanent low vision, blindness, or a physical, perceptual, or reading disability that prevents them from using regular print materials. It has one full-time staff member who is also the Head of the Talking Book Library: Anita Chouinard. Last year, this library offered 120 programs, some in collaboration with TADL, that drew a total of 2,765 people. A monthly book club and a chair yoga program are especially popular with patrons. This library also offers adaptive technology. In addition to providing reader advisory services and technical assistance with NLS equipment, TBL has a robust community outreach program. Chouinard visits 11 senior living facilities each month with the library’s Bookmobile. Getting reading materials to people who can’t physically access a library building is a special mission for Chouinard. “I can’t imagine a life without books and I don’t want anyone else to have to imagine that either,” Chouinard said. Congratulations to the TBL on the work AND the award! Summer is flying by! Howard Photo: National Library Service Director J. Broughton; Anita Chouinard; 14th Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden; Library Director Michele P. Howard As a librarian for 30 years, I have been lucky enough to have some pretty memorable experiences in libraries but July 18, 2024 is definitely the highlight so far. Anita Chouinard, the manager of the Larry Gorton Talking Book Library at TADL was recognized by the Library of Congress (see the picture above) for her outstanding services to readers with visual, physical or print disabilities. Anita and I were flown to Washington, DC to receive this prestigious award at a luncheon in the historic Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress. We were literally treated like rock stars. Anita’s love of reading and passion for helping has resulted in innovative services, creative outreach programs, and new levels of engagement not seen before. I couldn’t be more proud of the important work we do, especially Anita’s work and the team of individuals at TADL who support her to enable her to get this award. But that's not all! I'm so proud of all our summer readers :) Our Summer Reading Club readers read over 2,000,000 (yes, two million) minutes in six weeks. We had just over 3,600 readers register this year, second only to 2017's Universe of Stories! You can tell our library values literacy and community by the numbers of friendly faces that came to the library and programs for the past six weeks. Bravo everyone! Additionally we couldn’t have had such a successful Summer Reading program without all of our amazing volunteers! These include: Bronwen Heath Mike Paul Paul Deyo (TADL Trustee) Dawn Buchanan Dawn Rogers Linda Barker Kendra Kelly Laura Solomon I'll leave you with just a few more TADL facts: * TADL's library network averages 1,147 visitors each day * All together, our buildings are open 301 hours each week * In 2023 library patrons checked out $15.8M worth of items Our libraries are vibrant spaces, heavily used by our communities - if you know someone who hasn't been to the library recently, invite them to visit with you. Share a favorite reading spot or attend one of our great programs (tadl.org/events). Enjoy the rest of summer and keep reading!
