Howard “Elections belong to the people.” ~ Abraham Lincoln (https://catalog.tadl.org/main/details?id=30437071) Free and fair elections are a hallmark of democracy and while elections are political, the right to vote is not. As some of you may know, the Main Library’s McGuire Community Room is a polling location for Precinct 7 for the City of Traverse City. Along with the City, TADL has taken every precaution we can as a polling site to protect against cyber, physical and operational risks. With the exception of the McGuire Community Room, Woodmere will be open to the public normal hours on November 5th (9 am to 8 pm). Please know that only the McGuire Community Room area will be open from 7am until they are done counting. An interesting fact is that libraries, along with the military, always rank in the top two most trusted institutions, according to Pew and Gallup surveys. Study after study shows that libraries are a place people go to get trustworthy and reliable information. Last year, the TADL staff answered approximately 97,416 reference questions. That’s over 266 questions a day spread throughout the district and various desks. If you have not yet voted and would like to research issues please reach out to a librarian. Helping you locate information on any topic is a key part of our profession. We also have a link to voter resources on our home page at tadl.org. Looking a bit beyond the election, we look forward to seeing everyone downtown again this year at the Light Parade (scheduled for Nov. 23). We’re all very excited because we will have books to hand out to children along the parade route! Since it’s nearly the season of Thanksgiving I would like to close with a heartfelt thank you to the private donor who has been funding all the extra books to give away AND also say thank you to everyone else who has volunteered, visited, or been part of our library community in another way. Enjoy the start of cozy reading season!
