Cosplay is the art of dressing up as a fictional character and adapting some aspects of their personality. According to a few sources, the Japanese term "cosplay" (コスプレ, kosupure) was coined in 1984 by Nobuyuki Takahashi. The magazine where it is thought to have been first printed can be viewed on YeinJee's Asian Journal
