Event Details

On Tuesday April 16, 2024, from 5:00 to 6:30 PM, the LWVGTA will present a program focused on recognizing
dis -and mis-information.

Traverse City Record-Eagle Executive Editor Rebecca Pierce and Scott Harmsen, Grand Valley State University
adjunct professor who teaches journalism and communication, including media literacy, will lead the
discussion about whether the information we are receiving is factual and truthful, especially with AI and
social media discrepancies. Discussion will include effective use of communication strategies and how these
strategies can be used to spread an organization’s message.

They will be joined by panelists Tak Ready, West Senior High School civics and government educator, who will
tell us how media literacy is taught in high school government and civics classes, including how to fact-check
and engage in civil discourse; and Ed Ronco, Interlochen Public Radio News Director, who will provide us with
their reporters’ code of ethics, explain accuracy checklists and how information is verified by IPR.
