Press Release - Dive into a summer filled with free and fun adventure at your library

(TRAVERSE CITY June 16, 2022) - Join the Traverse Area District Library (TADL) for a summer so epic we’re giving it a new name - the Summer Library Challenge! We’re challenging the community to explore free programs and other activities in addition to all the great books and media on the shelves. This all-ages program will kick-off Monday June 20 with a party at the Main Library on Woodmere Avenue, and wrap up August 1 with a community-wide celebration in Hull Park.

“One of the things I treasure most about summer at the library is that this is an event we do as a community,” said Michele P. Howard, Library Director. “Everyone chooses their own reading and programs yet we’re all working together toward our goal of 2,000,000 minutes - and we have so much fun along the way!”

This year’s theme is Oceans of Possibilities, and TADL Is celebrating everything water-related, with a focus on the Great Lakes. Each reading level and each library has a different schedule, so everyone is encouraged to start at tadl.org/summerreading and then check details at their home library.

The Week 1 schedule at the Main Library includes:

Monday June 20

  • Kick-off party, which starts at 10 am. A mermaid (Brittany Adams) will join us in the McGuire Room at 11 am for a story and photos

  • Teen improv program - 6 pm

Tuesday June 21

  • Summer clubhouse with crafts and snacks on the Main Library front lawn - 10 am

  • Kids Ocean Animal bingo - 4 pm

Wednesday June 22

  • Preschool storytime on the lawn, 11 am

  • Build n Create, 4 pm

Thursday June 23

  • Summer clubhouse with crafts and snacks on the Main Library front lawn, 10 am

  • Family Concert with Deep Blue Water Samba, 11 am

  • Glow-in-the-Dark Rock Painting for Tweens, 4 pm

  • Natural Shorelines and Vegetation (Adults), 6:30 pm

Friday June 24

  • Preschool in the Garden, Water Everywhere, 11 am

  • Nature Walk, 2 pm

And that’s just the first week! Find all these events and more at tadl.org/events.

“We encourage everyone to register and stop in early to pick up their Summer Library Challenge materials,” Howard said. “All items are while supplies last. Plus, the libraries are all beautifully decorated for summer, we hope you'll take a ride on the wave of summer challenge possibilities!"

Other programs that are happening in addition to the Summer Library Challenge include Tues. 6/21 Community Conversations Addiction & Recovery Series - Prevention & Youth Prevention; Wed. 6/22 blood drive (McGuire Room), 1-5 pm; and Thurs. 6/23 Grand Traverse Area Genealogical Society 1 pm.
