(TRAVERSE CITY) - You’ll find loads of treats and festive fall fare at your Traverse Area District Libraries this month. At the Main Library we have a slate of popular FREE events:

Sunday October 23 - Chili Cookoff Winners

The Chili Cookoff has quickly become one of our most popular events and we spiced things up with another great contest this year. Winners are as follows:

People’s Choice

  • 3rd Place - Letter 0, Katie
  • 2nd Place - Letter M, Tom
  • 1st Place - Letter B, Maria

 

Judges’ Choice

  • 3rd Place - Letter H, Daniel
  • 2nd Place - Letter I, Scott
  • 1st Place - Letter E, Alex

 

Chefs’ Choice (where all the chefs vote on their favorite) - Letter H, Daniel

Library Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Anyone who thinks librarians aren’t competitive hasn’t visited the Main Library’s pumpkin decorating contest. Starting Monday October 24, library groups will have a pumpkin display by the front desk. Stop in and vote for your favorite! Winners will be announced the afternoon of October 31. Photos are available upon request.

Book Events

  • Adults - The Lake Effect: A Lake Michigan Mosaic with Fred Carlisle with special guest Anne-Marie Oomen, Wednesday October 26 6:30 - 8 pm.

  • Kids - Scary Stories for Creepy Kids: Short and Spooky with a Side of Silly, Thursday October 27 4 - 4:30 pm.

Pumpkin Carving Demonstration

The Lord of the Gourd will be at the library to show us next-level pumpkin art, Thursday October 27 4 - 7 pm.

Costume Parade

Another highlight of our library year - the childrens’ costume parade - will be Monday October 31. The parade will start at 11 am and last until noon. Families are invited to join us, starting in the McGuire Room for music and games, then following a parade route around the first floor of the Main Library.

Book Sale

Our Friends of TADL group will be hosting their fantastic Fall Book Sale Nov. 4 - 6 in the McGuire Community Room. Prices are as follows: Hardcovers $2; paperbacks $1; CDs $1; DVDs $2

Special Collections books and bundle deals on CDs and DVDs will also be featured to celebrate our 40th anniversary!

Upcoming Closures

The East Bay Branch Library will be closed Tuesday November 8 for the election. All libraries will be closed Friday November 18 for a staff in-service.

Reminder - The WriteMichigan Short Story Contest is here!

TADL Is partnering again this year with the Kent District Library and the Canton Public Library in support of a statewide short story contest. Last year our region did have a teen winner and we look forward to improving our showing this year. This contest is a great opportunity for writers to get a story published and win up to $500! Categories include Youth, Teen, and Adult, and may be submitted in English or Spanish. Four prizes in each category: Judges' Choice ($500), Spanish Language Winner ($500), Readers' Choice ($250), and Judges' Choice Runner-Up There is a $10 entry fee for adults; the contest is free for children and teens.  Deadline is November 30.
