Whether you have a personal story to share, a fantasy world to build, or a compelling argument to make, writing is the perfect outlet for your creativity.

Hone Your Skills: Writing is a craft that improves with practice. By participating in contests, you'll have the chance to refine your writing skills, experiment with different styles, and receive valuable feedback from experienced writers and judges. This is an excellent opportunity to grow as a writer.

Build Confidence: Conquering the blank page and sharing your work with others can be an incredible confidence boost. As a young writer, a contest can give you the assurance that your words and ideas are valuable and worth sharing with the world.

Win Prizes: Let's not forget the enticing prizes that await the winners. From cash rewards to publication opportunities, there are exciting incentives to motivate you to give it your all.

How to Get Started:

Choose Your Contest: Most writing contests offer a variety of categories, such as short stories, poetry, essays, or even scripts. Pick a category that aligns with your interests and skills.

Craft Your Entry: Put your heart and soul into your writing. Your entry should be a true reflection of your creativity and passion. Make it engaging, unique, and, most importantly, authentic.

Review and Edit: Once you've written your piece, take the time to review and edit it. Check for grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors. Ensure your writing flows smoothly and is easy to understand.

Follow the Guidelines: Every writing contest has specific guidelines and rules. Make sure you read and follow these carefully to avoid disqualification.

Submit Your Entry: Don't hesitate! Submit your entry before the deadline. It's your chance to shine, so seize it.

Remember, writing is a lifelong adventure, and it all starts with a single step. Your words have the power to inspire, entertain, and change the world. So, grab your pen or keyboard and enter a Writing Contest – the world is eager to hear your story!

The Freedom to Read National Teen Writing Contest

Entries accepted until Friday, December 22, 2023 | 11:59 PM ET

Contest Prompt: Why Is the Freedom to Read Important to You?

At a time of rising book bans, we invite all teens, wherever in the United States you live, to make your voices heard by answering this essential question in essays and personal stories of 500 to 1,500 words. You may want to consider the following: How have book bans affected you and how have you stood against them? How have books and reading shaped your identity? Why is it important in your community that we share the right to read freely? You don't need to answer these questions—please feel free to interpret the prompt however you like.

Freedom of Expression Award:

Entries accepted by January 16, 2024 3:00 pm CT or when 1000 applications have been received

Freedom of Expression Prompt: For our new Creative Writing Award in 2023, in the face of these book bans and attacks on free expression, we are celebrating the power of books and stories. Tell us about one banned book that changed your life and why.

Want to work on your entries with other aspiring teen writers? Attend the teen writing program at the Main Traverse City location on Tuesdays in November, 4:00-5:30. This will be writing time with supports. If you get stumped, there will be prompts and tools to help you move your story on. There will be hot chocolate, tea and a snack to keep your ideas flowing.
