Warm your heart with a story during Library Lovers’ Month!

(TRAVERSE CITY) - February is Library Lovers’ Month, and although we celebrate all year long we do have some enthralling features planned this month at the Traverse Area District Library.

Library Movie Nights!

TADL’s own Cinema Curiosa is planning two movie nights this month:

  • Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time - Fri. Feb. 10, McGuire Community Room 8 pm

Over 25 years, filmmaker Robert B. Weide developed an intimate bond with provocative author Kurt Vonnegut.. Their friendship inspired Weide to produce a biographical film of the writer's life and works. Featuring never-before-seen archival footage of the late author.

  • Summer of Soul - Fri. Feb. 24, McGuire Community Room 8 pm

In his acclaimed debut as a filmmaker, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentary—part music film, part historical record created around The Harlem Cultural Festival. SUMMER OF SOUL premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it won both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award.

Blind Date with a Book - Book dates available!

Looking for a new book love? Check out our Blind Date with a Book display on the 2nd floor at the top of the staircase. Each wrapped book has a hint as to what’s inside. Take one home today!

Valentines with the Cherry Queen - Sat. Feb. 11, McGuire Community Room 11 am

Families are invited to join us for a visit with the Traverse City National Cherry Festival Queen, Olivia Coolman, in celebration of Valentine's Day. There will be Valentine-themed children's stories, a meet 'n greet with Queen Olivia, and crafts to round out the program (including decorating your own heart-shaped cookie, while supplies last).

Inland Seas Tools of the Trade - Sat. Feb. 25, McGuire Community Room 2 pm

Learn more about Inland Seas and the equipment they use to monitor and research our waters. There are hands-on elements but it is primarily an informational presentation. It is intended for adults and STEAM-interested student (6th - 12th grade) audiences.

Instant Pots with Scott - Tues. Feb. 28, McGuire Community Room 6:30 pm

Do you have an Instant Pot, or thinking of purchasing an Instant Pot, but not really sure what you can do with it? Join us for an evening with Scott Morey as he leads us through the amazing world of instant pot cooking. Rumor has it that there will also be samples of his award-winning Chicken Delicious Chili!

Health & Wellness

Join us for a Tai Chi class Fri. Feb. 17 at noon in the McGuire Community Room. The Traverse Health Clinic outreach van will also be at the Main Library every Wednesday afternoon this month from 1 - 4 pm. Visitors can get free blood pressure checks, free COVID test kits, and assistance with Medicaid redeterminations or applications.

This is all in addition to our usual full schedule of storytimes and regular events, so please check our calendar for the entire slate of activities. If you’re looking for something to do outside at any time we also have a new permanent storywalk, funded by Roswell and Patricia Ard. We installed the first story last week, start at the Little Free Library and continue on around the building.
