Join us Every Friday throughout Summer Reading Club for a STEAM related project or activity.

This week we will be joined by our friend Renee from Challenge Island for a fun kinetic sand activity.

Adventure Begins at Your Library!  So come join Challenge Island Northwest Michigan for some summer fun as we jump into Book 1 of the Challenge Island book series (available in your library). In the first book, Bridge to Sharktooth Island, Joy, Daniel, & Kimani find themselves on a giant boulder in the ocean looking for ways to get across shark-infested waters to the island beach.  In chapter 2, Joy jumps into the water and finds out it is water-covered mud. When she splashes down, she sinks into the mud! First, up to her ankles, and then up to her knees! "Help! It's quicksand! I'm sinking!"

Your adventure challenge is to follow a specific recipe to make your own sinking sands (kinetic sand).  Once you have it made, if you don't sink in the sand yourself, you can make some sand sculptures or sand castles. You will be able to take home your new kinetic sand.  We will also be making snappy sharks and shark origami or you can take these challenges home for later.

This event is open from 3:00 pm am to 4:30 pm.  You can start your engineering adventure at any time within this event time.  This is a family event where adults can participate as well.  Adult(s) can read each step in the recipe and kids can do the action. It will take teamwork, good listening skills, and following directions in a specific order and specific way to allow your sand to become kinetic sand.

Do you have what it takes to engineer this creation into existence?  If so, your adventure awaits!
