Have you had any fun this October? We sure have here at the library. There have been fun events all month long (author talks, info sessions, and a pumpkin contest), so I wanted to share one of my favorite annual displays with you. I usually put together a mix of new and old horror titles. This year I added in some mystery, suspense, and thriller titles for anyone who might not be into the scarier stories. The display (complete with terrible book puns) is on the 2nd floor filing cabinets next to the Reference Desk. I used the library stock of decorations to try to evoke a graveyard and tree.
But reader, this is where I lost the plot. I used brown paper to wrap one of the square pillars and taped leaves to it. It’s supposed to be a tree, but it kind of looks like the pillar is under construction or something. I had this grand scheme in my head where the tree would have winding branches that stretched to either side of the aisle with bark textured with the purposeful crinkles of the paper. It didn’t work out at all and makes me laugh to look at (because yes of course I left it up). You can see this hilarity until Nov. 1.
Crafting disappointments aside, I have a lot of fun reading horror books. My one coworker doesn’t agree with me at all (she’s more into mysteries/historical fiction (also cool)), but for me, the stories are so layered and compelling. What’s fun are the different worlds in each book and the plethora of unreliable narrators. Sometimes the vampires are archivists (Dead Collections). Sometimes they’re genetically modified to look super young, which gets kinda weird (Fledgling). Or somethings there aren’t vampires at all, and it’s the house causing the problems (The Haunting of Hill House).
Here is a list of ten titles from that display.
- Coyote Songs by Gabino Iglesias
- The Bad Seed by William March
- Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth
- Bunny by Mona Awad
- Quiet in Her Bones by Nalini Singh
- Bluebird, Bluebird by Attica Locke
- Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmad Saadawi
- The Graveyard Apartment by Mariko Koike
- The Deep by Alma Katsu
- The Dangers of Smoking in Bed by Mariana Enriquez
Maybe ten is too many to pick from. Here are quizzes that will pick for you:
- Escape the Haunted Library from publisher Tor/Forge (I got super lost in the haunted library but eventually came to Daughter of Redwinter by Ed McDonald)
- Sweet Tooth for Reading also from Tor/Forge (mine was Book of Night by Holly Black)
- Which Horror Novel Should You Read this Halloween? from Book Riot (I got What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher)
Happy Hauntings!
