This month's speaker is: Grace Yakuber
Grace Yakuber will present on the History of the Traverse City Airport: Sharing Stories of the Local Aviators and the Airport that Made Them.
Traverse City’s aviation history is deeply intertwined with the development of Cherry Capital Airport, the contributions of EAA Chapter 234, and the long-standing tradition of the National Cherry Festival Airshow. Cherry Capital Airport, established in 1936, has evolved from a small municipal airfield into a vital regional hub, supporting both commercial and general aviation while fueling economic growth through tourism and industry. The formation of EAA Chapter 234 in 1955 marked a significant milestone for local aviation, fostering a community of pilots, builders, and enthusiasts dedicated to advancing experimental and recreational flight. Meanwhile, the National Cherry Festival Airshow has showcased aviation excellence for decades, bringing world-class aerobatic teams and historic aircraft to the region, reinforcing Traverse City’s connection to the broader aviation world. These elements have not only shaped the infrastructure and economy of the area but have also had a profound cultural and personal impact, inspiring generations of aviators—including myself—to pursue flying, aircraft restoration, and education in aerospace fields. This legacy continues to influence the region, ensuring that aviation remains a cornerstone of Traverse City’s rich legacy.
